Rare Pair of Early-Period Stoneware Rooster Figures with Alkaline Glaze, Incised "E.M.," Edwin Meaders, Cleveland, GA, circa 1970, each of wheel-thrown and hand-modeled construction, standing atop pedestal bases with serrated tails and combs. Surfaces covered in blue-green alkaline glaze with cobalt highlights to eyes. Each incised on underside "E.M." for Edwin Meaders. This pair of roosters were produced very early in Meaders' career and are modeled after the work of his mother, Arie. The color and application of the glaze , more-horizontal neck orientation, and initialed signature are all characteristic of Arie Meaders pottery and differ markedly from Edwin Meaders later roosters, which were produced on a larger scale. Among the finest and earliest known pairs of Edwin Meaders roosters, the potter's most famous form. One with reglued comb. Another with reglued comb and one point on comb reglued. Otherwise excellent condition. Dimensions (of each): H 12 1/2" ; L 11 1/2".
