Extremely Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, attributed to Henry Remmey, Sr., Baltimore, MD, circa 1820, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a crested bird perched on a leafy stem with berries. Heavily-incised feather detail to bird. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Very few Baltimore stoneware jugs are known with decoration of any sort, and this example is the first we have seen featuring an incised design. The distinctive shape of the bird leads to a firm attribution to Henry Remmey, Sr., the Manhattan, New York-trained potter who transformed the Baltimore stoneware industry. A significant recent discovery. Two thin, horizontal cracks in base of handle. Otherwise excellent condition. H 11 1/2".
